Men's Fitness Magazine Visits OTC UK A couple of weeks ago we taught Nick Hutchings from UK's Men's Fitness Magazine how to windsurf. He was down at the Weymouth an Portland National Sailing Academy doing an article with Nick Dempsey about his Olympic training routine. Nick then brought the magazine editor to us to have a go at our sport for himself. The wind on the day was pretty strong, but Nick was up to the challenge, and after a couple of hours on the water, his comment was, "Well, that certainly won't be my last time on a windsurfer - that was excellent." The article will be in the magazine early next year - check on Men's Fitness Website to hear of its release.

Skandia Sail For Gold Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy are playing host to the Skandia sponsored Sail For Gold Regatta this week. It is the second of three 'dry runs' for the Olympics, and this year is sure to be the most dramatic and participated as it is an open event. Next year each country selects their Olypmic team, so the number of competitors is significantly reduced from the 1000 that hit the water each day this week! Early RSX results are in for day one, with Nick Dempsey in second, and Bryony Shaw fourth. Click on the image to be redirected to the Skandia website.

Severne Launch 2011 Wave Sails Ben Severne and his team were out with us in Tenerife at the start of July, putting the finishing tweaks to their 2011 wave sail range. Dany then used the latest S1 to great effect in the PWA Pozo event, and as such provided a great photo opportunity for the brand's website, which they have just launched. We're pleased to announce that we now have a selection of the 2011 sails in stock for our clients to try out. Click on the icon on the right to be redirected to the 2011 Severne wave sail website.

Latest Shots on Weymouth Windsurfing Association The wind is back at last and all the likely suspects have been seen blasting or spinning through the harbour. Andy Chandler from Weymouth Windsurfing Association found time in between blasting on his slalom kit to take these photos. He's putting in some serious training for the BSA Event to be held here in Weymouth at the end of the season, and is going to prove to be the man to beat in the Amateur fleet. OTC UK Opens Yesterday we opened the doors of the OTC UK building to the public for the first time. The UK's RSX World Champion Nick Dempsey cut the ribbon and started the day's proceedings. Our thanks to everyone who turned up on the day to celebrate with us. Those of you who were eagle-eyed enough may have realised the building isn't quite finished (small details such as the roof to put on...) but this will be completed in the next week, rendering the centre fully operational. Forces Windsurfing Challenge A group of windsurfers from the Army, Navy and Royal Air Force plan to circumnavigate the 60 nautical miles around the Isle of Wight in October this year.
The inspiration for organiser Jon Metcalfe to plan this event was hearing about a young Rifleman called Craig Wood. Craig was severely wounded in Afghanistan on his last tour and as a result his life and his family’s lives have changed forever. He was a keen and passionate windsurfer and one day hopes to be able to get back on a board and windsurf again. Click here to read more.
Jon says: "By undertaking this challenge we hope to make a difference and do our bit, supporting people like Craig and other injured Servicemen and Women from our Armed Forces. This is both a physically and mentally demanding challenge, and will take a huge amount of training, skill and dedication to successfully complete the circumnavigation of the Isle of Wight.
So that we have the best chance of completing the challenge we have planned for two attempts over two different weeks. The first week will be 13-19th September and the second week will be the 11-17th October; this will give us the best opportunity to maximise the correct tide and wind conditions.
The challenge will start off Calshot Spit in the Solent, where we will navigate our way through the busy western Solent towards the Needles. Once safely round |
|
we will sail a downwind course through the rough and unpredictable waters of the south side of the island. Approaching St Catherine’s Point lighthouse, (the most southern tip of the island) is one of the most hazardous points of the circumnavigation we will have to face, as the waters here can get seriously rough with strong tides.
The challenge will start off Calshot Spit in the Solent, where we will navigate our way through the busy western Solent towards the Needles. Once safely round we will sail a downwind course through the rough and unpredictable waters of the south side of the island. Approaching St Catherine’s Point lighthouse, (the most southern tip of the island) is one of the most hazardous points of the circumnavigation we will have to face, as the waters here can get seriously rough with strong tides.
Once round the southern tip of the island we head along the east coast towards Lucombe Ledge, across Sandown Bay to Culver Point, which marks the entry back into the eastern Solent. Again this point can be treacherous to say the least as we will need to sail an upwind course, navigating the main commercial shipping channels which run into Southampton water, before safely crossing the finish line off Calshot Spit again.
A quote from Major Allan Cross (Forces Open Windsurfing Champion): “This is an excellent challenge for our Forces Windsurfing Community. As you know, we in the forces like a good challenge and couldn’t think of a more befitting way to help our windsurfing colleague Craig and his fellow injured colleagues, serving their country in this Help for Heroes Charity Event” There will be other events to raise money in support of this main venture, so please check back regularly to see how we are doing.
For further infomation on the event or if you want to get involved please contact Jon Metcalfe.

Dany Seventh in Pozo The Pozo PWA wave event has come to a close and it is Victor Fernandez who has taken the top honours this year, exacting his revenge on Phillip Koster for upsetting his string of Pozo wins last year. Dany had a tough heat in the double, trying to stall the progression of a determined Ricardo Campello. Unfortunately it wasn't to be and Campello went on to fight for a podium finish. But a great result for Dany nonetheless and for the third year in a row he has proved he is a force to be reckoned with on Pozo's centre-stage.

First Sections of UK Build Erected Yesterday the first sections of the steel structure that will make the skeleton of the UK building went up. It was really difficult to imagine the scale of the building when the beams and columns were delivered on a flat-bed truck, but now that the outline of the build can be seen, we can't help but begin to get excited. More updates to follow.

Dany Charging in Pozo Pozo started with really light winds this year, which signals yet again that 2010 is proving to be a bit of a funny (read 'el Niño') year. When the competition did get underway though, it is clear that Dany's hard training is being put to good affect. He charged into the semis of the single elimination, only to be halted by the eventual winner - Victor Fernandez. The double elimination is now being battled out, so keep up to date by visiting the PWA Website. Photo: PWA/Carter.

Steel Structure For UK Building Arrives Last night we took delivery of the steel columns, bracing and beams that will make up the skeleton for the UK building. The harbour was hidden in a vail of sea mist for most of the day, but lifted in the evening, just in time to see the sun set, giving us enough light to unload the steels from the flatbed truck. Many thanks to John Dunstan and his team from SO51 Steel Fabrications for all his work - it has been quite a mission to get to this point, but with the frame now delivered, it wont be long before the centre takes shape. The official opening date will be confirmed very soon ... watch this space.

Ladies - Get With the FLOW Another website has just been made live over the weekend - FLOW - For Ladies Of Windsurfing. Founded by Tenerife staff member Amy Carter, it is an online information resource designed specifically for female windsurfers. Amy has been working tirelessly over the last few months getting it off the ground, and her hard work is clear to see when you skip through the pages on the site - there's loads of information in there already! We wish her all the success in the world with it and are very proud to associated with such a worthwhile initiative. Click on the image of the homepage on the right to be re-directed.
Here's the official press release: |
|
"Founded by Amy Carter, the website is brimming full of stories, experiences, tips and pointers all relevant to the fairer sex within the sport. It sets a clear aim to not only encourage more females into windsurfing, but also to provide a much needed support system and a sense of community for those already enjoying the sport. Discussing the objectives of the FLOW concept, it is hard not to feel the amount of passion Amy (a distinguished racer herself) has put into the project:
"Windsurfing has always been the sport I've loved! After years involved in the sport I have become increasingly frustrated with the perception that you must be tough and strong to windsurf. I felt that something needed to be done to breakdown this misconception. By providing information for women, by women, FLOW aims to create a fun, friendly 'club atmosphere' so that we can help each other learn, develop, enjoy and achieve together in the sport."
"Whilst much of the location information is focussed around Amy's native UK at the moment, many of the articles and tips are relevant to women wherever they are. So whether you're looking to crack that next manoeuvre, don't know which kit to buy, have an article, photo or tip you want to share ... or have a female friend you want to get into the sport (boys!), visit www.flowindsurfing.com and get involved."

Fun Conditions in South Bay Having returned from competing in Rhosneigr and Ireland, where he came an excellent fifth in the Pro fleet, Graham was welcomed home with a good NE forecast. Rather than mixing it up with the crowds at the Harbour Wall or Cabezo, he decided to play around in the more gentle waves of South Bay, right in front of the centre. The waves here are excellent for the novice wave rider as they break on a gently shelved sandy beach and don't hold a great deal of punch. But as Gray proves here, they can be a lot of fun!

Boys Doing Well in Ireland! Just a quick update about Adam and Graham out in Ireland. After the disappointment of Rhosneigr being a no-wind event, it seems Brandon Bay is once again delivering the goods. The winds might be light but both Adam and Graham are getting plenty of coverage; Grey was also said to be the standout sailor in the daily update, taking the scalp of Chris Murray to face Timo Mullen in the run for fourth. If he beats him, it would then be Phil Horrocks, John Skye and finally Ben Proffitt to reach the top - but we know he has it in him! There is also video footage on Boardseeker, with Grey doing the commentary. Pics: Dave White.

Windsurfing 4 Cancer Research Target Reached at Weymouth The Sunrise to Sunset challenge was on 2nd May this year, and unfortunately coincided with some chilly NE winds, plummeting us back into what felt like the depths of winter! Nevertheless, the group of ten kids we taught on Saturday returned for the second day of their 'Start Windsurfing' course and were eager to get back out on the water (this time with the W4CR streamers on their sails). Our hats go off to them as they battled the cold conditions, and stengthening veering winds brilliantly. They are all students at Wey Valley School, and were sponsored through the course by the Will Mackaness Trust - another incredibly worthwhile cause. It was our pleasure to work with both charities and introduce such a great bunch of young people to our sport. Thanks to all who helped support the weekend.

BSA Weymouth Event on Video Last weekend marked the return of British slalom windsurfing to Weymouth, hosted by The OTC at our new UK venue - the WPNSA, which will play host to the Olympic Sailing Classes in 2012.
Whilst the wind didn't play ball all weekend, we had more than enough on the second day of the event to get some results. What is more, the weather was super warm and allowed the 46 competitors to get a taste for things to come once we open the centre properly.
On that note, we have been waiting patiently for the local authorities to grant us permission for the centre building we have proposed. It has been a trying time, but at last on Monday, we received the news that our planning consent had been granted! We're sure this was in no small part down to the situation being reported on in the local 'Dorset Echo' newspaper the previous Friday, (see imge below). We are now hurredly putting our building plans into action, and should be able to announce the official opening date for OTC UK very soon. Watch this space! Many thanks to Reuben Ellis for putting the event videos together - great job mate.

With setting up OTC UK in Weymouth, is was only natural that we would want to be involved. The Sunrise to Sunset windsurf takes place on the 2nd May, and starts at 0537 as dawn breaks. We will have kit on hand for people to hire, tuition and tips for those that want it, and there will be a BBQ in the evening, doubling up as the first social of the Weymouth Windsurfing Association (WWA) calendar. The BSA season got off to a great start over Easter at Tenby, and now it's our turn to build on their success. Boujmaa Youth Clinic in Weymouth! An event not to be missed by any youth windsurfer - Boujmaa Guilloul is coming to UK shores this May to help broaden horizons and demonstrate just what is possible in windsurfing today.
He is probably the most inspiring and expressive sailor the sport has ever seen, and comes up with more new manoeuvres than Johnny Vegas has had hot dinners! Just take a look at his latest stunt - a dark tack (or Crazy Pete) into a switch stance forward. We've also just found footage of him throwing himself into one midway through this video of a Jump Off Contest in Maui. The move just looks insane ... and pretty unlandable to us, but true to form Boujmaa is probably landing them by now! Although not winning the contest, he got the highest recorded stock air at over 62 feet!
The event will take place at OTC UK in Weymouth on the 8th and 9th May. Starboard will be down in force with lots of demo equipment, and plenty of instructors will be on hand to help guide the participants through everything from basic non-planing moves to the latest freestyle stunts. There will then be an informal get together in the evening in WPNSA's Spinnaker's Bar to meet Boujmaa and talk about his home town of Moulay in Morocco, find out about life on the PWA Tour, and also how he plucks up the courage to throw himself into these ridiculous manoeuvres with such reckless abandon!
Spaces on the clinic are going to be limited so get in contact with us by email or by phoning +44(0)121 299 9965 to reserve your place now.

Dany Bruch on the Move
OTC: Hi Dany, you have been in WA for over a month now training for the forthcoming season. How has it been so far?
OTC: Seems like your training is going well! Not a bad time to leave Tenerife either - waves have been great, but the wind pattern has been very odd the last two months. So anyway, what's happening with your board sponsor for this season?
OTC: So what has been your choice?
Straightaway, he introduced me to his new concept - the "Trailer Fin". It is basically a twin fin, with the two fins positioned further forward and wider apart, so that you can turn super vertical, rotating directly with your back foot over the fin. As the fins are so forward, to avoid spinout and to keep the board tracking he is using an extra little single fin (hence the “Trailer Fin” name) behind the twinser. I tried it at Margies and it's amazing! It is the most versatile board I've ever used and with the fins I can trim the board for every condition. I use the straight twinser set up on smaller days in short pocket waves. When it becomes bigger I put the trailer fin in and adjust the position to have the perfect grip for fast carving bottom turns. In onshore conditions and for pure jumping I can use the board as a normal single fin. It could even be used as a “thruster” board with two little fins in the front, but I havent tested that yet...
OTC: And how has it been with Severne over there?
OTC: When are you coming back then? What are your plans for the following month?
OTC: And what about some coaching clinics of your own at our centre?

FlyMount Video The FlyMount is a unique mounting system, which allows you to position a standard waterproof digital camera on your windsurfing equipment and capture footage and images which until recently were solely the domain of those with a very expensive camera housing.
This video was put together by FlyMount's Director Chris Knapton whilst out here in Tenerife on holiday. For more information on the mount, visit flymount.com.

Musso Makes the Most of it in La Tejita So as you may have gathered from the string of latest posts on this page, the wind has been just a touch out of the ordinary the last few weeks if not months. In fact, that only tells a fraction of the story - whilst mainland Europe is struggling to cope with record amounts of snow, the Canaries are struggling to cope with record amounts of rainwater! We even heard that the floods of Tenerife's capital, Santa Cruz, made the news headlines across Europe, with roads turning into rivers, and cars either being washed away, or buried in debris. All that aside, here in the south, life goes on and windsurfers make the most of every opportunity of wind. These photos were taken by Jochen from windsurfingtenerife.com on the same day as the others below.

Escape The Winter Chill! Okay, so the start of 2010 hasn't blessed us with masses of wind yet, but it is very pleasant out here with temperatures in the mid-twenties, which has on occasion brought a bonus day of wind to El Médano. So why not escape the snow in the UK and continent and head out here for a winter warmer? That's hopefully if you're not snowed in, like our OTC UK van! Happy New Year everyone.
